Forestry creates more jobs in financial crisis

More countries are fighting the current economic recession as we can see in this week’s London Summit of Group of 20 meeting. Leaders of the world’s 20 largest economic powers discuss the global recession and decide new measures establishing the world on a more stable economic footing. In facts, many countries are facing the facts that their economic growth is decreasing, less exports and more jobs are loss. Many governments then made a plan of new economic stimulus for various sectors, including natural resources business such forestry. The new economic stimulus is expected to create more jobs.

I noted a press release of FAO referring recent report on Green Jobs by ILO. According to the study, unemployment worldwide could increase from 179 million in 2007 to 198 million in 2009 under the best case scenario.  With the worst case scenario, it reach higher as 230 million.

Another estimation of  job losses in US says it spread from construction, retail, professional services until manufacturing. The number were varies from 12,000 to 51,000 for each sector.

Jobs of bioenergy in recession?

Green jobs become more popular in the next years? A report of UNEP says that green jobs become something of an emblem of a more sustainable economy and society.  The report refers green jobs  as work in agriculture, industry, services and administration that contributes to preserving or restoring the quality of the environment.

I remember that such report was noted by NY Times as over-hyped the potential to create good jobs from industries like wind and solar power.  These argument may relevant in developed countries such Europe and US in the normal economic situation.  The problem is our economy and society are facing recession.

Global eco-movements around the world

People in many countries will celebrate Earth Hour by switch the lights off for sixty minutes. This global eco-movement may become the biggest celebration involving millions people, thousands cities and hundreds of countries. They call the moment as global election which enabling people to vote earth for against global warming.

I note that switching off the lights for a certain period not only for energy saving reason. This is about how to raise global awareness of global warming as well as inspiring people to take simple action that matters in combating global warming.

However, there are many eco friendly simple actions campaigned by communities, groups or networks. I list it quickly:
