Fueling forest for food

Debating biofuel as promising commodity has been months. Some scientits argued that biofuel is not eco-friendly as alternative fuel. Inline with this, recent news of BBC talks about doubt of leaders on biofuel development.

The leaders are Bolivian President Evo Morales and President Alan Garcia of Peru. They warned biofuel development could harmed poor people. In the other hand, UK Prime Minister said that “UK should be more selective in our support for biofuel”

Biofuel development threats forest in tropical area, such Indonesia. Studies link oil palm plantation expansion with deforestation. In fact, it happened in Sumatra and Kalimantan mineral soil, as well as the peat soil. However, producing biodiesel from unsustainable oil palm plantation is unfavorable. (more…)

Sub Saharan Africa is known as the poorest area in the world, according to recent rural poverty report. It’s estimated that about 60% of 300 million rural people on the continent live in extreme poverty.

In Africa, women play important role in agricultural production –the most important sector contributing income for African households. Recent study of ICRAF found that women are not profiting nearly as much as they could from agroforestry – farm practice enabling the growing of trees on farms.

I think this study alerts us how the effort of alleviating poverty in Africa is facing the critical situation on women’s role. Let see 5 important findings of ICRAF’s study on gender and agriculture production in Africa:

A report on World Environmental Day (WED) 2011 in India highlights Forests in a Green Economy: A Synthesis, a recent UN Environment Programme (UNEP) analysis. The report prepared by Kate Langford of World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), a leading research and development institution on agroforestry.
