Social networks foster sustainable development

My attention on internet development finds new perspective related to sustainable development. I thought there’s a complex relation between internet and sustainable development.  People who develop internet are engineers and people who engage with sustainable development issues mostly decision makers, NGO activism and social scientists.  I guess there are limited collaboration researches  joining  both internet and sustainable development.

Then I have chance to explore Jeffery D Sachs newest book of Common Wealth: Economics for a crowded planet (2008). Sachs, according to Edward o Wilson in its foreword, has written a state of the world report of immediate and enormous practical value.

Global reform of trade policy will reduce poverty?

A new working paper published by WorldBank assessed how global reform of trade policy has relation with poverty reduction in Indonesia. The author, Peter Warr from Australian National Universty (ANU), argues the global reform in all commodities is a significant potential source of poverty reduction for Indonesia.

According to Warr, the poor –rural and urban—have a strong interest in global trade policy reform. If Indonesia were to liberalize unilaterally, poverty incidence also would decline but the effect is small. If liberalization is confined to agricultural products, the effects are similar but the declines in poverty incidence within Indonesia are much smaller.

Slum tourism helps poor people?

Slum tourism found not only in Mumbai, even the Oscar winner movie of Slumdog Millionare set at that area. In Jakarta, as CNN reports, there is such activity transporting foreigner to walk around slum areas, meeting with people saying “I’m running out of rice”.  The organizer said that the tour was about “the other culture meet the other culture”.
